Florence, Arizona, is a town in Pinal County. It was founded in 1866 by Levi Ruggles, a veteran of the American Civil War, and is the sixth-oldest non-Native American settlement in the state. It’s located 45 minutes away from both Phoenix and Tucson. The downtown area of the town has been designated as a National Historic District, and it contains over 25 buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

If you want to learn more about the history of the town, visit McFarland State Historic Park. In 1974, Ernest McFarland, who served as Arizona governor, state senator, and Arizona Supreme Court Justice, gifted the historic Florence courthouse to Arizona State Parks after he retired from public service. This is the oldest standing courthouse in Arizona (built in 1878), and it now allows people to go back and experience frontier times. In addition to the courthouse, you can also view the old jail and treasurer and district attorney’s offices. 

If you’re in the mood for a short, quick adventure, consider hiking the Poston Butte Trail to Poston Butte. This steep, rocky trail leads to the unique pyramidal tomb of Charles Debrille Poston and features sweeping views of the Arizona landscape. Poston was once known as the “Father of Arizona,” though he is a widely forgotten historical figure today.
