Adamsville, Arizona, is a small town in Pinal County that was once a thriving farm town but became a ghost town by the 1920s. Named after its original settler, Fred A. Adams, Adamsville hasn’t had a reported population since 1880, as it is considered a ghost town. 

Adamsville was founded in 1866 and is one of the first settlements in Pinal County. Adamsville was once a thriving small farming town with stores, homes, a post office, and a flour mill. However, in 1900, the Gila River flooded and destroyed a majority of the town, forcing residents to move. By the 1920s, the town was completely abandoned and is now considered a ghost town. 

Though not much of the original town remains, there is a historical marker that gives us information about what life was like there. The marker includes a short inscription that describes more about life in Adamsville in the late 1800s.

It explains that Adamsville had a flour mill and several stores, and that life was rough, with a lot of violence, like shootings and stabbings being common. It detailed that many homes were made of adobe, which was easily washed away in the flooding. For those who are interested in ghost towns and what early frontier life was like, the Adamsville historical marker is the perfect place to visit.

Near Adamsville, you’ll find McFarland State Historic Park. It is one of the most important historical sites in nearby Florence, Arizona. It’s centered around the original Pinal County Courthouse that was built in 1878. This was constructed from locally made adobe bricks; the building is a reflection of the Sonoran and Anglo-American architectural styles and is authentic to Arizona’s territorial past. Over the years, the building has served multiple purposes, as a courthouse, jail, hospital, and community center. This makes it a unique place to see where much of the town’s early history took place.

Today, the building is a small museum where visitors can walk through preserved rooms and exhibits that highlight early frontier life, government, and the development of Florence, Arizona, along the Gila River. The McFarland State Historic Park makes it an idea stop for anyone who is interested in learning more about Arizona’s early history.
